BR Bandits Week 1 recap
A new summer season in 2020 has seen the formation of a new independent league – the Liberation Professional Baseball League. LPBL is a four-team circuit playing games at League Stadium in Huntingburg, Indiana.
With all of MiLB and several independent leagues sitting out the season, LPBL looks to offer a new alternative to professional baseball. Operated by Brian Williams, who owns a new independent team called the California Dogecoin, the league currently has three teams (BaseballResume Bandits, California Dogecoin, Indiana Barn Owls) formed with a tryout scheduled for August 25-26 to fill a fourth.
One of the league partners is Sam Burton. He operates BaseballResume.com a new online platform created to connect unsigned players with scouts and managers. Burton has spent the past three seasons competing on the independent circuit. He is organizing the BR Bandits who went 2-2 in their first week of league play. Burton also found himself on the mound in their latest game pitching a perfect seventh inning and earning a save.
“I am still a player and working on my career as a pitcher,” said Burton. “I was able to make an appearance in the Sunday game where I threw one inning. I’ve been able to promote the league and help bring in guys to play given the connections I’ve made over the past four seasons playing in various Indy leagues.”
Asked about the role of Baseball Resume Burton said, “BR has all of the Rapsodo equipment including pitching and hitting, so we are trying to get guys’ numbers to help develop them more while they are playing in the league. Overall, I’m very appreciative for the opportunity to be involved with league, and I hope to see it continue to grow and improve each week as we play into the fall.”
Four games into the season Burton is optimistic – and happy to be playing baseball this summer.
“Overall, I think we have room for improvement, specifically tightening up our defense,” commented Burton. “Ray Ortega has done an excellent job so far, and we brought in a few new guys to finish up the weekend series and also have a few more coming in shortly. I think we will have a solid team, and I look forward to getting more baseball underway and helping guys improve and hopefully moved and signed to higher leagues.”
League play continues this week beginning on Wednesday.
